Why Own It?
Active/passive investing is a strategy employed by many of the world’s most successful investors and is available for this first time to our unitholders through Galileo Canadian Active/Passive Fund. This fund is ideally suited to unitholders with a longer-term time horizon seeking growth through investments in early stage Canadian companies balanced by a well diversified portfolio of large capitalization companies. This unique passive/active strategy is designed to provide better diversification of risk, decreased volatility and improved performance over active only or passive (index only) investing.
Objective
This fund’s objective is to provide long-term growth of capital by using an innovative and proven active/passive combination of smaller and medium-sized securities (actively chosen) and large capitalization Canadian companies (passively chosen).
Strategy
60% of the portfolio is invested in common shares of the 50 largest capitalization companies listed on the TSX. Shares in these companies were purchased on an equal dollar basis, meaning each represented 1.2% of the total portfolio at the time of initial purchase. This part of the portfolio is directed by Shaunessy & Co. in their role as portfolio advisor. This equal weighting significantly improves diversification and liquidity by reducing concentration risk.
The remaining 40% of the portfolio is managed by Galileo using a bottom-up growth investment style. Companies populating this part of the portfolio are smaller and medium-sized Canadian businesses in early stage development. Securities of these companies are held until they have achieved success through rising sales, earnings and cash flows.
