Why Own It?
Active/passive investing is a strategy employed by many of the world’s most successful investors and is available for this first time to our unitholders through Galileo Global Active/Passive Fund. This fund is ideally suited to unitholders with a longer-term time horizon seeking the growth potential of large, medium and small capitalization companies located around the world. This unique passive/active strategy, employed on a global basis, is designed to provide better diversification of risk, decreased volatility and improved performance over active only or passive (index only) investments in narrowly defined regions.
Objective
Our objective in managing this fund is to provide capital growth by using an innovative and proven active/passive investment approach – available only from Galileo Funds.
Strategy
60% of the portfolio is passively invested by Shaunessy Investment Counsel Inc. in their role as portfolio advisor. Within this passive portfolio, half consists of the 50 largest US stocks which are included in the S&P 100 and half consists of American and half consists of American Depository Receipts or global shares issued by the 50 largest developed-country companies. These stocks, depository receipts and shares are purchased on an equal dollar basis so that at the time of initial investment they each represented 0.6% of the Fund’s total portfolio at that time. This equal weighting significantly improves diversification and liquidity by reducing concentration risk.
The remaining 40% of the portfolio is managed by Galileo using a bottom-up growth investment style. The allocation of this portion of the portfolio among sectors and countries will generally be determined by where the portfolio manager finds the best investment opportunities.
